Video: Richard Harris
"Last night we were fortunate enough to attend a mega five hour concert at the Bozar that commemorated the 50th anniversary of the independence of Congo by bringing together many of the top musicians of Congolese rumba or soukous of the past half century. Soukous is the fountainhead of modern African music deeply influencing almost all the various movements all over the continents .I bought my tickets a week ago and was surprised that the best seats were still available. I thought "I hope there'll be people there." When I got there to pick up the tickets before the concert it was a mob scene; I guess that just like the concert, buying the tickets was on Congolese time. Not only were Papa Wemba and Mbilia Bel performing so were Fally Ipupa, Werrason, JB Mpiana, Ferre Golas and many more. We were in the heat of the action in the 2nd row center; Mbilia Bel tried to get Mathieu to go up on stage and dance with her. He declined; I told him he was a idiot, how many chances does one get to dance with Mbilia Bel? The music was peerless and even though Victor Horta probably never imagined that his fabulous hall would ever be the scene of such music, it fit the hall perfectly.
The video (photos and filming were strictly forbidden) is the last two and a half minutes of the anthem Africa which closed the show with everyone on stage.
note: seeing the finished YouTube product I noticed that the top and bottom of the images are missing which makes for some headless people in parts of the video."
